Ingredients
For the Cake:
- 1 box (15.25 oz) chocolate cake mix (or homemade chocolate cake recipe)
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 3 large eggs
For the Caramel Filling:
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
For the Toppings:
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chocolate ganache (or melted chocolate)
- 1/4 cup caramel sauce
Instructions
Step 1: Bake the Cake
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and lightly flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Prepare the chocolate cake mix according to the package instructions by combining the cake mix, water, oil, and eggs.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Step 2: Prepare the Caramel Filling
- In a small bowl, mix the sweetened condensed milk, caramel sauce, and sea salt until smooth.
- Set aside for assembly.
Step 3: Assemble the Cake
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Use the back of a spoon to spread half of the caramel filling evenly over the top.
- Sprinkle half of the chopped pecans and mini chocolate chips over the caramel.
- Add the second cake layer on top and spread the remaining caramel filling evenly over it.
Step 4: Add the Toppings
- Drizzle the top of the cake with chocolate ganache and caramel sauce in decorative patterns.
- Sprinkle the remaining pecans and mini chocolate chips over the top.
Tips for Success:
- Chill for Stability: Refrigerate the cake for 30 minutes before slicing to help the layers set.
- Homemade Caramel: For a richer flavor, make your own caramel sauce by cooking sugar, butter, and cream together.
- Add Texture: Toast the pecans for an extra nutty flavor and crunch.
Serving Recommendations:
- Pair with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
- Serve chilled for a firm texture or at room temperature for gooey layers.
