These Pastrami & Sauerkraut Rolls are a savory delight, blending tender pastrami, tangy sauerkraut, and creamy cheese all wrapped in golden, flaky pastry. Perfect for an appetizer, lunch, or snack, they deliver the comforting flavors of a classic deli sandwich in a portable, bite-sized treat.
Origin:
Inspired by the iconic Reuben sandwich, this recipe transforms deli staples into a convenient and versatile pastry roll, ideal for on-the-go indulgence.
Ingredients:
For the Rolls:
- 1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed
- 1/2 pound (225g) pastrami, thinly sliced
- 1 cup (120g) sauerkraut, drained and squeezed dry
- 1 cup (100g) shredded Swiss cheese
- 2 tablespoons Dijon or whole-grain mustard
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Optional Dipping Sauce:
- 1/4 cup (60g) mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- A dash of hot sauce (optional)
Instructions:
1. Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Prepare the Puff Pastry:
- Roll out the thawed puff pastry on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle (about 10×12 inches).
3. Assemble the Rolls:
- Spread mustard evenly over the puff pastry.
- Layer the pastrami, sauerkraut, and shredded Swiss cheese over the mustard, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.
4. Roll and Seal:
- Starting from one long side, tightly roll the pastry into a log. Seal the seam by pressing gently with your fingers or a little water.
- Slice the log into 1-inch pieces and place them cut-side up on the prepared baking sheet.
5. Egg Wash and Bake:
- Brush the tops of the rolls with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
- Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
6. Prepare the Dipping Sauce (Optional):
- In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce. Adjust seasoning to taste.
7. Serve:
- Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with the dipping sauce on the side.
Tips for Success:
- Make sure the sauerkraut is well-drained to avoid soggy pastry.
- For extra crispiness, bake the rolls on a preheated baking stone or metal tray.
- Use a serrated knife for clean slices of the pastry roll.
Recommendations:
- Enjoy as a party appetizer or serve with a green salad for a light meal.
- Substitute pastrami with corned beef or smoked turkey for a variation.
