It’s a comforting and hearty dish that pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. This homemade version is even better than the classic frozen dinner, with deep flavors and a satisfying, saucy texture.

Origin

Salisbury steak is a classic American comfort food that dates back to the 19th century, named after Dr. James Salisbury, who promoted minced beef as a healthy meal. These meatballs take inspiration from the traditional dish, offering a bite-sized twist that’s easy to prepare and enjoy.

Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • ½ medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried thyme)

Optional Garnishes:

  • Fresh parsley, chopped
  • Mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles for serving

Instructions

1. Make the Meatballs:

  • In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  • Form into 1-inch meatballs and set aside.

2. Cook the Meatballs:

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Cook the meatballs in batches for 5–7 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides.
  • Remove meatballs and set aside.

3. Prepare the Gravy:

  • In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté onions and mushrooms until softened (about 3–4 minutes).
  • Sprinkle in flour and stir for 1 minute to remove the raw taste.
  • Slowly whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, pepper, and thyme.
  • Simmer for 5 minutes until the gravy thickens.

4. Simmer the Meatballs in Gravy:

  • Return the meatballs to the skillet, coating them with the gravy.
  • Cover and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the meatballs are fully cooked.

5. Serve & Enjoy!

  • Garnish with fresh parsley and serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Tips for Success

  • Don’t overmix the meatball mixture, or they may become tough.
  • Sear the meatballs well before simmering to lock in juices.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of red wine or balsamic vinegar to the gravy.
  • Make ahead—the meatballs and gravy reheat beautifully!

Recommendations

  • Serve with buttery mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Add a touch of heavy cream to the gravy for a richer finish.
