Homemade Coffee Ice Cream

Description

This homemade coffee ice cream is smooth, creamy, and packed with bold coffee flavor. Made with real coffee and a rich custard base, it’s the perfect frozen treat for coffee lovers. Whether served alone or paired with desserts, this ice cream is a delightful indulgence.

Origin

Coffee ice cream has long been a favorite worldwide, especially in Italy and France, where rich gelato and custard-based ice creams are popular. This homemade version lets you control the intensity of the coffee flavor while achieving a perfectly creamy texture.

Ingredients Quantity

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons instant espresso powder (or ½ cup strong brewed coffee, cooled)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Ingredients Optional

  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon (for warmth)
  • 2 tablespoons Kahlúa or coffee liqueur (for enhanced flavor)
  • ½ cup chocolate chips or chocolate shavings (for texture)
  • ½ cup caramel swirls or crushed cookies

Instructions

  1. Heat the Milk & Cream: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine heavy cream, milk, and sugar. Stir until sugar dissolves and mixture is warm (do not boil).
  2. Whisk the Egg Yolks: In a separate bowl, whisk egg yolks. Slowly add about ½ cup of the warm milk mixture, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
  3. Cook the Custard: Pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon (about 5–7 minutes).
  4. Add Coffee & Flavoring: Remove from heat and stir in espresso powder (or brewed coffee), vanilla extract, and salt.
  5. Chill the Mixture: Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any lumps. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  6. Churn the Ice Cream: Pour the chilled mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions (usually 20–25 minutes).
  7. Freeze & Serve: Transfer to a container and freeze for at least 2 hours before serving.

Tips for Success

  • Use high-quality coffee for the best flavor.
  • Chill the mixture thoroughly before churning for a smoother texture.
  • If you don’t have an ice cream maker, pour the mixture into a shallow container, freeze, and stir every 30 minutes until creamy.

Recommendations

  • Serve with a drizzle of chocolate sauce or caramel.
  • Pair with warm brownies or espresso for an extra indulgent treat.
  • Store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 2 weeks.
