Beef Fried Rice
Description:
Beef Fried Rice is a quick, flavorful one-pan meal combining tender, seasoned beef with perfectly cooked rice, crisp vegetables, and savory sauces. This dish is a versatile staple of Asian-inspired cuisine and an excellent way to use leftover rice for a hearty, satisfying meal.
Origin:
Fried rice originated in China and has become a popular dish worldwide, with regional variations. Adding beef creates a hearty version often enjoyed in Asian-American cuisine.
Ingredients (Serves 4):
For the Beef:
- Beef (flank steak or sirloin): 1 lb, thinly sliced
- Soy sauce: 2 tbsp
- Cornstarch: 1 tsp
- Sesame oil: 1 tsp
For the Fried Rice:
- Cooked rice: 4 cups (preferably day-old)
- Vegetable oil: 3 tbsp
- Onion: 1 medium, diced
- Garlic: 3 cloves, minced
- Carrots: 1 cup, diced
- Peas: ½ cup (frozen or fresh)
- Eggs: 2, beaten
- Soy sauce: 3 tbsp
- Oyster sauce: 2 tbsp (optional but adds depth)
- Salt and black pepper: To taste
- Green onions: 2, thinly sliced (for garnish)
Optional Ingredients:
- Ginger: 1 tsp, grated (for additional flavor)
- Red chili flakes: ½ tsp (for a spicy kick)
Instructions:
Step 1: Marinate the Beef
- In a bowl, combine soy sauce, cornstarch, and sesame oil. Add the sliced beef and marinate for 15-20 minutes.
Step 2: Cook the Beef
- Heat 1 tbsp of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat.
- Add the beef in a single layer and cook until browned, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
Step 3: Sauté the Vegetables
- In the same skillet, heat another 1 tbsp of vegetable oil.
- Add the onion, garlic, carrots, and peas. Sauté until tender, about 3-5 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
Step 4: Scramble the Eggs
- Reduce heat to medium and add the remaining oil. Pour in the beaten eggs and scramble until just set.
Step 5: Combine Everything
- Add the cooked rice to the skillet with the scrambled eggs. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes, breaking up any clumps.
- Return the beef and vegetables to the skillet.
- Add soy sauce, oyster sauce, and season with salt and pepper. Stir well to combine and heat through.
Step 6: Garnish and Serve
- Remove from heat and garnish with sliced green onions. Serve hot.
Tips for Success:
- Rice Texture: Use day-old rice for the best texture. Freshly cooked rice can be spread out on a tray and chilled to mimic day-old rice.
- High Heat: Cook on high heat to achieve that authentic wok-fried flavor.
- Customizable: Swap peas and carrots with bell peppers, broccoli, or mushrooms for variety.
Recommendations:
- Serve With: Pair with a side of egg rolls or a light soup like miso or hot-and-sour.
- Leftovers: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet for best results.
